Intent Statement for Geography
The subject leader for Geography is Ms Maggie Wilson.
They can be contacted by emailing admin@northstainley.n-yorks.sch.uk using the subject title FAO of Ms Maggie Wilson.
With oversight and support from our Senior Leadership team subject leaders oversee and monitor the intent, implementation and impact of their subject.
Intent
At North Stainley C.E. Primary School we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The Geography curriculum, which is informed by the National Curriculum, enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other curriculum areas and which can be used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. The topics taught aim to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through school, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and the formation of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge and skills are progressive and sequenced, to provide the framework and approaches that provide explanation of how the Earth’s features are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.
Geography Rationale
Through the study of geography, the children will be encouraged and given the opportunity to make sense of their surroundings and to extend their knowledge and interest to the world in which they live. We hope that as he children grow into adulthood they will develop an enquiring mind, understanding, tolerance and an appreciation of their place in the world.

Geography Policy
Implementation
Geography at North Stainley C.E. is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve a depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and these are laid out in a Knowledge Organiser. Consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group in school.
Geography Long Term Plan
Impact
The measure of impact is presently being developed by subject leaders.
Outcomes in topic books, evidence a broad and balanced geography curriculum and demonstrate children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Children review their successes in achieving the lesson objectives at the end of every session and are actively encouraged to identify their own target areas. Children also record what they have learned comparative to their starting points at every topic.
