PSHE

The subject leader for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) is Miss Laurel Thewsey. They can be contacted by emailing n-admin@gfnsschools.co.uk.

At our Federation, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

Our intent

• To develop each child’s confidence, wellbeing and social skills through an enriched curriculum to ensure that the social, cultural, moral, spiritual and emotional ethos in every aspect of our school community is fulfilled

• To develop responsible, respectful and active citizens who are able to play their part and become actively involved in public life as adults

• To develop and deepen pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance

• To promote equality of opportunity so that all pupils can thrive together, understanding that difference is a positive, not a negative, and that individual characteristics make people unique

• To develop pupils’ confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally healthy

• To enable pupils to recognise online and offline risks to their well-being – for example, risks from criminal and sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, substance misuse, gang activity, radicalisation and extremism – and making them aware of the support available to them

• To develop pupils’ understanding of how to keep physically healthy, eat healthily and maintain an active lifestyle, including giving ample opportunities for pupils to be active during the school day and through extra-curricular activities

• To enable pupils to recognise the dangers of inappropriate use of mobile technology and social media

• To develop pupils’ age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships through appropriate relationship and sex education

Implementation

Whole-school approach Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference - Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and understanding.

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals - Includes goal-setting, aspirations, who do I want to become and what would I like to do for work and to contribute to society.

Spring 2: Healthy Me - Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices, sleep, nutrition, rest and exercise.

At our Federation, we allocate one hour to PSHE each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways: Assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system, Learning Charter, through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school. We aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community. Class teachers deliver the weekly lessons to their own classes.
