The Role of Local Governors
Our Local Academy Council is made up of parents, staff members and representatives from the church. A governing body’s overriding responsibility is to work in partnership with the head teacher to promote continuous improvement in the performance of the school. This involves the establishment of a development plan, the setting of challenging but achievable targets and the interpretation of information to assess progress and determine appropriate action. Aligned to its improvement role, the Local Academy Council is there to be a critical friend who can provide the right balance between supporting and challenging the performance of both the head teacher and the school. Governors also have some specific roles such as Child Protection and Health and Safety. The Local Academy Council works closely with LDLT to ensure standards are maintained and advanced in all areas of the school.

How do we do this?
Self Evaluation, we look at what we do and what we can do to improve. Agree the School Development Plan and monitor its implementation. Ensure that the school meets its statutory and professional responsibilities as an employer and a provider of services to children. Plan how the school budget is to be used and monitor compliance with the Budget. Authorise the policies and strategies required to provide the best available education to children. Ensure the children have a safe and supportive environment. Review how the school meets its statutory responsibilities to provide for the needs of every individual child. Agree the appropriate staff structure for the school and ensure that staff is managed in a way that holds them to account for their performance and develops their potential for the future. Confirm that the voice of the children, parents and others with a legitimate interest in the school are heard and taken into account. Resolve any serious conflict within the school or between the school and parents. Appoint and support the staff of the school.
How do we work?
We meet as a full Governing Body at every half-term. Extraordinary meetings are arranged if circumstances warrant such action. Every year we elect a Chair and Vice-Chair from amongst the existing members of the Governing Body (employees at the School cannot be elected to these positions). The Governing Body also has a Clerk who arranges its meetings, circulates the agenda and papers, takes minutes of full meetings of the Governing Body, and circulates information to Governors from the Local Authority. In order to delegate and share the responsibilities of the Governing Body more effectively, we have sub-committees for things such as finance, premises and performance management. Governors meet with the Headteacher, separately from the full Governing Body meetings and provide reports back to the full governors. Governors also have responsibilities for particular aspects of the school, these include Literacy, Numeracy, IT, Health & Safety, Child Protection, Landscape and Special Needs

Although originally a “Southerner”, I lived in the Ripon area for 171/2 years whilst our children were growing up. We then returned south for 15 years but were delighted to move to North Stainley in August 2017 when we retired.
I have been involved with education as a parent/grandparent and also in my professional work as a Speech and Language Therapist. I was also a Foundation Governor of a church secondary school for a number of years.
Since moving to the village I have enjoyed becoming part of the community and getting involved with various activities in North Stainley and Ripon, including St Mary’s Church and Ripon Cathedral.
When I was appointed as a Foundation Governor, I was delighted to see the strong links which already existed between the school and the local church. I am enjoying helping these links to develop further and encouraging the Christian Vision and values which underpin all aspects of school life.

I have lived in North Stainley for the Last 14 Years, moving here from Lancashire in 2014. My involvement in Education has centred around my own children's and grandchildren's schooling and teaching in a local school in Kitwe Zambia, this was both a rewarding and humbling experience. The children who attended this school, came from the poorest of families, often living in shacks in Townships. Their desire to learn and improve their lives and the lives of their families and pride in the fact that they were having an education was very humbling.
Since returning from Zambia my own career has focused on Adult Mental Heath and Social Care, working both in Lancashire and North Yorkshire for both the Health Service, as a Mental Heath Nurse and for the Local Authority, as a Social Worker.
Hobby wise I enjoy being retired, the Theatre, reading and being with my family, plus of course planning then going on holiday.

I have been a teacher at the school for twelve years now. I am passionate about ensuring high quality teaching and learning for all. I strive to give all children at our school the opportunity to achieve and aspire to fulfil their potential. My own children have been through North Stainley CE Primary School from Reception to Year 6 and often look back at their time here with fond memories.

I have greatly enjoyed serving North Stainley C of E Primary School as a Parent Governor and more recently Chair of Finance, since we moved to North Stainley several years ago.
During this time my daughter attended the school which our whole family has found to be both dynamic and caring with a highly committed team of staff and fellow Governors.
I have always believed that primary schools have such an important role in developing children's skills and creativity, nurturing confidence and providing a solid platform that will in turn prepare them for secondary school and further. It has been a privilege to see the school deliver at every level.
