Studfold Farm and Fairy Gardens

Class One had a wonderful and educational day at Studfold Farm and Adventure Trail! The visit was the perfect introduction to our upcoming science topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, and it gave the children the chance to explore the natural world in a hands‑on, meaningful way.

Throughout the day, the children investigated a range of habitats including fields, forests and rivers, learning how different environments meet the basic needs of the plants and animals that live there. Using magnifying glasses, they examined plants, insects and natural materials up close, helping them identify a variety of living things and understand how each one is suited to its habitat. They also explored microhabitats, discovering the tiny creatures that live under logs, in leaf litter and around tree roots.

A highlight of the trip was spending time in the bird hide, where the children listened carefully to different bird calls, sketched what they saw and ticked off the species they were able to identify. This supported their understanding of how animals depend on their surroundings and on each other to survive.

We also linked our learning to our ongoing work on seasonal changes. The children used sundials to observe how the sun moves across the sky and how shadows change throughout the day, helping them think about how daylight varies across the seasons.

The adventure trail offered plenty of opportunities for teamwork and problem‑solving too. The children worked together to crack codes, solve puzzles and build dens, strengthening their communication skills and resilience while having lots of fun.

It was a fantastic day filled with curiosity, discovery and outdoor learning. Both children and adults came away inspired and excited for the science work ahead.
